Simple tips help make your vacation safer

W e all keep hearing that fewer people will travel by road because of the gas prices, but for those who will be heading out by vehicle, here are some tips that will make your vacation more pleasant and safe.

BEFORE YOU GO

Plan your trip ahead of time. If you are going to a city you've never been to, use a map -- and study it -- before you hit the streets. Check with the local police in advance of your trip to find the areas of town you don't want to discover by yourself. The local crime prevention unit is usually very helpful with advice.

Take only the credit cards you will absolutely need. Carry traveler's checks and a minimal amount of cash. Break up the cash you carry so you don't pull out a wad of money for everyone to see. Women shouldn't carry purses and men should keep their wallets in the front pockets of their pants.

Before you unpack anything, make sure all the locks in your hotel room work. Never leave your hotel room unlocked, even to go to the ice or vending machine. Either use the safe in your room to stash valuables or ask the front desk to use theirs.

Create a plan in case you get separated from your friends or family. Come up with a place to meet, and make sure you have the phone number handy of the local police -- just in case you need it.

STOPPING FOR GAS

Pick gas stations that are well-lit and, if possible, have video-surveillance cameras at the pumps.

Use the pump closest to the main building. Credit card theft happens a lot at gas stations -- crooks will pull the slot out of the pump and place a skimmer in it. They generally use the pumps that are farthest from the building so they aren't seen by the attendant. Before you insert a credit card, grab the card slot if you can and sort of give it a pull to make sure it's secure. If it has been tampered with, you will know it. If you are not sure, use another pump or speak to the attendant.

Always remove your keys and lock your car doors while you at the pump. Pay attention to your surroundings and don't speak on your cellphone.

Keep valuables out of view in your vehicle try to pack everything in the trunk.

If you have to use the restroom and are traveling with someone, make sure they stay in the car. If you are traveling alone, pump the gas first then move your car to the front of the building where it's more visible -- and lock the doors.

Everyone deserves a peaceful vacation. But it can quickly become just the opposite for those who aren't vigilant.

Having said that, have a safe and happy trip.
