Leaf peeping with Crystal Symphony

Though we are still deep in summer, autumn is soon to follow. With fall foliage comes cruises along the New England coast, among them four sailings aboard the Crystal Symphony.

The first Crystal Symphony fall foray is the Sept. 16-27 "Colonial Classics" from New York to Montreal, with Newport, Boston and Quebec City among the ports of call. The ship reverses course for the Sept. 27-Oct. 8 "Northeast Discovery," returning to New York from Montreal, with optional golf rounds on six courses along the way.

"Crimson Dreams" then heads back to Montreal from New York Oct. 8-19, while the "New World Explorer" completes the schedule with a wine- and food-themed voyage from Montreal to New York Oct. 19-29. Depending on the sailing, fares start at $3,435-$3,495, with port, security and handling charges adding $390-$430. (888-799-4625; http://www.crystalcruises.com/).

Superior kayaking

Located on the south shore of Lake Superior, Wisconsin's Apostle Islands were named for either the 12 Biblical apostles or a notorious band of pirates. Whichever story you choose to believe, the islands are home to sandy beaches and scenic sea caves -- ideal kayaking territory for both beginning and seasoned paddlers.

This summer Wilderness Inquiry operates three- and four-night kayaking adventures among the sculpted rock formations and sunken shipwrecks. Priced at $365 and $495, respectively, the outings run about once a week until mid-September. Fees cover camping, meals, equipment use and leadership.

The trips depart from Point Detour, Wis. (800-728-0719; http://www.wildernessinquiry.org/)

Critters of Crescent City

New Orleans isn't the first place that pops into mind as a family destination, but the Big Easy has many child-friendly attractions. Among these are the Audubon Aquarium of the Americas, with its penguins and sea otters, and the Audubon Zoo, home to white tigers and even white alligators.

Four tickets to either the aquarium or the zoo are an integral part of the "Four Legs or Fins Family Getaway" package offered at many New Orleans properties operated by Marriott. Valid through Nov. 15, the package also includes one night's accommodations and breakfast for two adults and two kids.

Rates vary depending on the hotel and date selected. For instance, the package at the New Orleans Marriott is priced at $179-$329, while the same at the Courtyard by Marriott New Orleans runs $149-$299. (866-530-3763; http://www.neworleans.marriott.com/)
