Define Your Style

One reason for having a wardrobe built largely around one theme is that it vastly simplifies the question of what to wear when you’re trying to rush out the door. Also, it presents a coherent image of you to the rest of the world, and we all know that others will form opinions of you based on how you dress. You’ve already done the hard work of figuring out how to make your best traits shine through, and in comparison, figuring out how to define your style is easy.

Begin by getting rid of anything in your wardrobe that seems more suited to who you were five years ago than to who you are today. Next, ask yourself questions about the kind of lifestyle you lead. If you’re an investment banker working 18 hours a day with little free time, you’re going to need a very different wardrobe than someone who’s a DJ. To help you stay true to yourself, we’ve put together this handy guide to help you define your style. For each look, we’ve compiled a list of the must-have pieces you’ll need to pull off your particular style and a few labels you might want to check out and add to your closet. So read on to become one step closer to your ideal self.

Signature pieces: Argyle sweaters, polo shirts, tweed blazers, oxford shirts, loafers, pressed khaki trousers, anything logoed or monogrammed

Preppy men take care in their appearance, although not in an overly studied kind of way. Like Prince Harry, these men always look good. They are well-groomed, probably clean-shaven, and may recoil at the idea of trendy clothing. If you find yourself drawn toward bright pastels, earth tones, nautical-inspired garments, and if white is one of your favorite colors, your style falls into this category.

Preps tend to project polish and others often view them as well-rounded and stable individuals. Because they may spend their leisure time engaged in active pursuits that involve a lot of fraternizing, such as golf and tennis, a preppy wardrobe requires pieces that transition easily from the office to the club, which is where staples like polo shirts come in. For those of you who identify with this style but have a bit of a rebellious streak, try mixing prints and patterns in the same outfit when you want to funk things up a bit -- just make sure everything is in the same color family or you’ll seem horribly disorganized.

Signature designers: Calvin Klein, Levis, Valentino, John Varvatos, Jil Sander, Lanvin, Paul Smith, Theory, Zegna, Hugo Boss, Club Monaco, Tiger of Sweden, Gap
Signature pieces: Knee length wool coats, white dress shirts, immaculately cut suits, trench coats, cardigans, sweater vests, sleek dress shoes, cashmere sweaters, pea coats, silk ties, scarves
Style icons:
George Clooney, Denzel Washington, Clive Owen

While classic overlaps with preppy, the two styles are not one and the same as the former tends to be more in line with the traditional French way of dressing. If camel, black, white, navy, and gray are the dominant colors in your wardrobe, your style likely falls into this category.

Men who love classic clothes tend to seek out quality over quantity, so your wardrobe may be sparse if your budget’s not huge. Yet, you exude natural confidence, much like
George Clooney, because wherever you go you’re always appropriately dressed, and you’re never, ever out of style. You invest in timeless pieces made from fabrics like wool and cashmere, and you take care of your clothes. The best thing about adhering to this style is that, while you’re probably willing to do some short-term damage to your bank account by splurging on items like cashmere sweaters, you know that you’ll still be wearing these items 10 years from now.

Signature designers: Marc Jacobs, American Apparel, Converse, Urban Outfitters, Cheap Monday, Brown Sound, anything secondhand, kitschy or vintage
Signature pieces: Slim-fit jeans, tuxedo vests, printed hoodies, novelty T-shirts with ironic slogans, plaid or gingham shirts, sweaters nicked from your grandfather, cropped jackets, retro sunglasses
Style icons:
Beck, Heath Ledger, Kele Okereke

If you’ve grown a mustache or you’re thinking about doing it, if you live for the arts and the indie music scene, and you love to while away time in cafes sipping organic, fair-traded java... you may be a hipster. Others view you as an informed, socially conscious individual who doesn’t follow mainstream fashion trends. Like Beck, you enjoy putting together eclectic ensembles and scouring thrift stores in order to mix unique finds with your wardrobe staples of skinny
jeans and funky sunglasses.

The overall effect you hope to achieve when you get dressed is casual but artsy. Once you settle into living a more adult lifestyle, the only thing to remember is that less is best. Try to avoid piling on the kitsch at the office or others will think you’re stuck in an adolescent rut and might not take you seriously. At night, however, let your creative juices flow and go crazy.

Signature pieces: Whatever is about to blow up
Style icons:
Justin Timberlake, David Beckham, Ashton Kutcher, Kanye West

Known as a fashionite in certain circles, a trendsetting man eats, breathes and lives for fashion. He is trendy all the time, something that involves constantly keeping up on the latest labels and shows. Trendsetters are also fearlessly fashionable, so if you are one, you’ve got enough confidence to take a few fashion risks. Moreover, in your quest for the next big thing, you probably shop anywhere and everywhere you can, from high-end
online boutiques to the mall. Justin Timberlake is a perfect example of this kind of man because he changes his look a lot, continually reinventing his style so that he always appears relevant and contemporary. A few rules to keep in mind in order to always look enviably good: If you wore it the first time around, you probably shouldn’t wear it again; and, the older you are, the more you should stick to wearing only one or two standout pieces per outfit.

How to define your style

Signature designers: Nautica, Diesel, D2Squared, Adidas, Puma, J. Lindeberg, Billionaire Boy’s Club, Burton, Zoo York
Signature pieces: Cargo pants and shorts, track jackets, sneakers, hoodies, bomber or motorcycle jackets, funky designer denim, sport sunglasses, fitted golf shirts
Style icons:
Dave Chappelle, Owen Wilson

Men who enjoy sporty/casual chic are the kind of guys who might work from home or in a more laid-back environment. At the very least, their office has no dress code and they feel most comfortable in clothes that aren’t glued to their bodies. Others consider men with a sporty/casual chic style to be down-to-earth and chilled-out -- men who aim to be themselves.

If your style most resembles Dave Chappelle, live by these rules to make the most out of sporty chic: First, buy an iron. Casual and sporty can be chic, but rumpled, wrinkled clothes are not. Second, take care to balance your outfit so that if your bottoms are looser, your tops should be more fitted -- otherwise you’ll appear totally shapeless. Third, do invest in a few labels so that not everything you own looks like you might have bought it at a lower-end department store. Worthy items to splurge on include sunglasses, denim and your
shoes. Lastly, for when you hit the town, you do need a blazer or sports coat, although you won’t have to go to a fancy suit store to buy one as plenty of sportswear designers put out their own.

Signature pieces: Big sunglasses, chunky rings, silver neck chains, faded T-shirts, hats, wife beaters, leather jackets, fur trimmed coats, boots, slim fit or bootcut jeans, belts with metal hardware, wrist cuffs

Artists or those who work in a more relaxed environment, such as the entertainment industry, whether as sound engineers, DJs or promoters, are most able to sport a rock style during the day. If you’re a guy who loves rock looks, you’re the kind of man who marches to the beat of his own drum and others will agree that you really know how to let loose and enjoy yourself. Fortunately, you don’t have to spend much to achieve this seriously cool style.

What you need most in your closet are a lot of basics and a good leather jacket. After that, it’s all about the edgy
accessories, especially anything involving silver. Oh, and your hair… let’s not forget the hair. Visit a top stylist to get a hairstyle that looks great when you get up in the morning and then make sure you go back to the salon regularly to maintain your mane.

a style to call your own

Don’t worry if your style seems to fall into more than one category, because that’s what will make your look unique. On the other hand, do be concerned if your style is all over the place and you’ve got numerous pieces from each category, because that could potentially signal that you shop without a strategy and probably have a hard time putting together outfits. Defining your style will really streamline your shopping so that you’ll spend a lot less time doing it, but you’ll look twice as fabulous.
