What To Buy In 2009

Have you been dying to buy a new Blu-ray player? Or maybe your pockets are burning to purchase a new HDTV? Well, not so fast there, buddy. Sometimes it pays big to wait until next year to make that big tech purchase, especially when demand increases and prices fall like a ton of bricks.

Keeping all that in mind, here’s what to buy in 2009.

As guys, we understand the innate need to go out and get the upgrade to the latest piece of technology, but the old adage is true; good things come to those who wait. So, while your girl is waiting to buy the DVD release of Sex and the City, here’s your guide to what to buy in 2009.

OLED TV

They’re incredibly thin (0.1 inches to 0.4 inches), they have a crazy contrast ratio of 1,000,000:1, they have a faster response rate than LCD or plasma TVs, their colors are sharper than anything ever seen, and, the piece de resistance: they don’t need a backlight, which makes them more energy efficient than competitors. The question is; should you buy one or is it something to wait for and buy in 2009? Well, OLEDs don’t come in any size larger than 27 inches right now, they’re incredibly expensive and the brain trust at Sony is currently working out a way to expand their lifespan to that of other high-quality TVs. Oh, and don’t forget the patent issues; with multiple patents helped by multiple companies, licensing fees have to be paid to companies such as Kodak for every OLED TV off of the line.

If you want a high performance, huge and affordable OLED TV, you’ll be waiting until 2009 or beyond (approximately six years). LCD and Plasma prices are just starting to enter the real world, so it’s going to be a long time before demand matches supply for OLED TVs. OLED might be what to buy in 2009 if you’re purely seeking gadgetry, but if you're really wondering what to buy in 2009 plasma and LCD should still be high on your list.

Blu-ray DVD player

The format war is over. HD DVD went the way of Betamax and Blu-ray claimed a VHS-type victory, which makes it the official step up from DVD. That has got to mean we should all just run out and buy a Blu-ray player, right? Survey says -- wrong.

Sure, the lack of competition means manufacturers won’t be as eager to lower prices to stay competitive, but more people still have a DVD player, meaning Blue-Ray is still part of the elite market and still too expensive for Joe Blo compared to the average DVD player. However, as more movies are shot in high definition and more people buy HDTVs (something that is already happening with movies like Superman Returns, starring
Kate Bosworth) leading the way, and with the Consumer Electronics Association announcing a sharp increase in HDTV purchases in the last year), DVDs will loose their foothold on the market and Blu-ray will be the only format available.

That phenomenon may not happen for another couple of years, but for every month you wait, prices will drop and Blu-ray players become what to buy in 2009.

PS3

It’s not the Blu-ray player inside and it’s not the unbelievable graphics that are making the PS3 the most expensive console of the three next-gen systems, it’s the Cell processor inflated by 90 to 65 nanometers of circuitry that’s making the PS3 what it is. That’s why Sony wants to increase the PS3’s profitability by scaling down the processor to 45 nanometers and slimming down the production costs of each chip by 2009.

So, don’t make the dumb move and buy a system now because a PS3 is on our list of what to buy in 2009. Plus you can expect to find a sleeker, cheaper PS3 (provided that Blu-ray players’ prices drop by then as well).

Toyota Prius

The 2008 Toyota Prius not only helped save the environment, but it also helped save a few bills in your wallet. Sure, it had a little less content, but it also had a lower price. With gas prices skyrocketing to over $4 a gallon, Toyota has assured that the low price trend of the Prius will continue with its three models (base, luxury and eco) and have a base MSRP of $21,000. Though there is a slightly more enticing reason to buy a Prius than the price: Toyota is guaranteeing better fuel economy in the 2009 Prius than in the best-selling 2008 model. Can it be done? Buy one in 2009 and settle the issue for yourself.

Hopefully we’ve given you enough of a stop sign when it comes to investing in or unloading the above items. Hey, don’t let us tell you what to do, grab a PS3 on an impulse buy and watch the rest of the population walk out with a better deal because they had enough self-control to wait a year. Sometimes conservative is actually the smart thing to be.
